yesterday afternoon, i went to fedex to send some things to my mom. wendy williams was on the radio, i was almost finished paying and then i heard:
“the AP has just confirmed that barack obama has secured enough delegates to be the democratic presidential nominee.”
and i said “it is about DAMN time.”
and i got teary eyed and left. walked down the street and then it hit me and i started sobbing tears of joy. tears of “YES IT IS TIME THIS IS HAPPENING OH GOD OH MY DEAR GOOD GOD” joy.
i texted friends, who told me they were crying in their offices. i went back to my office and kept crying, even as co-workers jokingly asked if i needed tissue and giggled at the fact i was crying.
i got home as the results came in and continued talking on gchat to a dear friend in philly who related hillary’s non-concession speech to me. and then shared the beginning of obama’s victory speech before my wifey directed me to msnbc for the live stream.
and i sobbed and i sobbed and clapped and cheered and screamed and my neighbors might have thought i was crazy but fuck ‘em if they did, i think they’re crazy for not making as much celebratory noise as i did.
and i’m still crying today as i think of what is happening.
and when i’m not crying, i’m grinding my teeth and suppressing the urge to SCREAM.
but i am not in the office now, so here goes:
THIS IS SOME ENTITLED BULL SHIT.
(i’m not linking because if i read anything else i will break my computer and i already spent enough money replacing smashed chargers the week after wam so we’re just not going there)
i repeat:
ENTITLED. BULL. SHIT.
hillary lost. she did not win the nomination and it doesn’t matter if she conceded or not. obama is our nominee and in light of the racist attacks she made and endorsed against him and in light of the fact that she said that mccain was a better option than him and in light of the fact she was trying to offer HIM the vp spot when he was already ahead of her WHY IN THE HOLY HELL IS EVERYONE ACTING LIKE HE OWES HER SOMETHING?
now, if it’s a matter of truth that hillary’s 18 million supporters are so upset and hurt right now that unless she is the vp, they will either not vote or vote for mccain, then you know what?
THAT is some (eh hem hem hem) ENTITLED BULL SHIT.
IF you were actually voting for hillary because of her positions and her commitments, if you are a registered democrat because you SUPPORT that party, then WHY IN THE HOLY HELL WOULD YOU VOTE AGAINST OBAMA?
i’ve thought on this. long and hard. and all my initial impulses of “fuck y’all two times” aside, here’s what i’ve got:
when you believe it is more important to get what you want than to do what you claim is right, THAT is when you would cast such a vote.
the next president is going to be appointing at least three supreme court justices, so let’s all keep that in mind as i continue getting this shit out:
john mccain has already said he would appoint conservative judges.
john mccain is also in favor of staying in iraq a good long time.
NOW
if you say that you are anti-war BUT vote for mccain ’cause obama’s not hillary,
if you support roe v. wade BUT vote for mccain ’cause obama’s not hillary,
if you want to know social security will exist in your old age BUT vote for mccain ’cause obama’s not hillary,
if you believe in an improved (hell, new) healthcare system BUT vote for mccain ’cause obama’s not hillary
(i could do this all night but my blood pressure and jaw say no)
IF any of those ring true to you, then you know what that is? why, it’s some ENTITLED BULL SHIT.
so you know what, go on mr. lanny davis and mr. bob johnson and mrs. dianne feinstein. you go ‘head and tell someone who has WON THE NOMINATION fair and square (because no, hillary, you didn’t even win the popular vote) who MUST be their vp and continue fracturing the party unless it gets fixed YOUR way.
and if we end up with mccain in office because you withheld your vote for obama OR voted against him, then i hope you realize this:
in a country that has long claimed to promote free speech, many people share their voice with their vote. when you cast a ballot, you are saying “this is what i believe is right and just.” and though some have always taken the right to vote for granted, MANY have died for it. died for it. died to have a political voice. and so when it’s november and you step into the voting booth, remember that when you vote for someone, there is no “because i am angry” comment section. your statment is your choice. and if you can cast your vote without concern for what it means because you feel you’re making a point then, fine, do you.
but i’m going to have to ask you to keep any and all complaining to yourself when the consequences of your actions come back to haunt you.
* sung to ninja rap*
Go wifey go wifey go!
Go wifey go wifey go!
I cried too.
People think I’m crazy
But I don’t care
*does a happy dance
Maybe I just live in a bubble of intelligent, reasonable people, but I have a hard time believing that there are really all that many people who are saying they won’t vote for Obama because he’s not Hillary. I think the media is making a bigger deal out of it than it actually is. Plus, I think there is plenty of time before november for people who are actually saying that to come out of their little snit and realize how much they don’t want McCain to win.
*dances with wifey and devious diva ’cause she’s still crying when she sees pictures and reads the news and hears new broadcasts*
amy, my friend, i would love it if you could extend that bubble across the globe. i think i long ago gave up on expecting everyone to be intelligent and reasonable (which probably makes me a big jerk). i think everyone is capable of it, but i don’t think everyone wants to use that capability. i also think this election was VERY personal for a lot of people, and when something hits that close to home, it can be polarizing. i also think lots of folks are racist, and there is nothing intelligent or reasonable about that.
as well, at the end of the day (and this is something i was trying to get across in my post), if you’re really well off enough that you believe you’ll be okay no matter who takes office, you may well not leave your satanic snit. there are a lot of people who don’t like bush, campaigned for kerry, voted for kerry, and have not been negatively affected in the last few years. those who have enough money know that as much as bush has sucked the big one, they’re doing alright on a personal level right now. and so i fear there may well be enough people in that group right now who want what they want. and since they aren’t getting it, it doesn’t so much matter to them what their vote in november means for other people.
I can’t see any Hillary supporters switching to McCain on account of their woman not winning the nomination.
I really hate to be a party pooper, but I cannot help thinking all the goodwill that has poured out from progressive US-based blogs to Obama will not be reciprocated. Just look at what his website says about economic policy. Aside from reversing tax cuts for the wealthy, it’s neoliberal business as usual.
